BTOOOM! is a survival anime that was popular in the Fall of 2012. People eagerly awaited its second season because it had a suspenseful story.
The main character is Ryouta Sakamoto, a young guy who is a NEET (which means he’s not in school or working) but a top player in a game called BTOOOM! This game was all about shooting and was quite popular.
One day, Ryouta wakes up on a tropical island but can’t remember how he got there. As he’s exploring, he sees someone in the distance. He calls out for help, but instead of help, the person throws a bomb at him. This is when Ryouta realizes that his life is in danger and he’s somehow stuck in the world of the game BTOOOM!
If you liked BTOOOM!, here’s a list of similar anime we recommend. Want to know what they are? Let’s find out!
Anime Similar To BTOOOM!
1. Sword Art Online
Sword Art Online is an excellent anime based on a Light Novel by Reki Kawahara. It’s about a popular game called Sword Art Online (SAO), where players use a special helmet to control their game characters.
But things get intense when the players can’t log out of the game one day. And if they die in the game, they die in real life, too!
What’s interesting is that Sword Art Online and BTOOOM! have something in common. Both stories are about young guys who get stuck in a life-threatening game. They must play by the rules to survive and escape the game world. You can also check our article on anime like sword art online.
2. Mirai Nikki
Mirai Nikki is one of the most excellent assassin anime based on a manga by Sakae Esuno. The story follows a boy named Yuki, a loner who prefers to stay away from people. He spends time writing in his cellphone diary and chatting with his make-believe friend, Deus Ex Machina – the God of Time and Space.
But here’s the twist: one day, Yuki discovers that Deus is genuine and not just in his head. Deus drags Yuki into fierce competition against eleven other people.
Each of them gets a remarkable diary that can predict the future, but every diary is unique, with its strengths and weaknesses.
For the next 90 days, these contestants must survive, and only one can win. The winner gets to become the new God of Time and Space.
If you’re into the whole survival game vibe where players fight against each other, just like in Btooom, you might enjoy Mirai Nikki. Both animes have that high-stakes survival theme where life and death are on the line. In Mirai Nikki, the players use diaries that predict the future, while in BTOOOM, they use specially crafted bombs.
3. Darwin’s Game
This guy named Kaname Sudou gets this weird invite to try out a smartphone game called “Darwin Game.” But here’s the twist: he can’t get out once he’s in the game.
Like Btooom, in Darwin Game, you’ve got a main character, and many folks are stuck playing a survival game they didn’t choose.
The cool part is that the Darwin Game is set in Tokyo, while Btooom takes place on a deserted tropical island. Also, both animes have a pretty blonde girl as one of the main characters who falls for the main guy. They’ve got these common survival themes and some romance sprinkled in.
4. Ousama Game The Animation
Meet Kanazawa Nobuaki, a new kid in school who’s a bit shy because of past incidents. But things start looking up during a sports festival.
Then, one day, Nobuaki and all his classmates get this strange message from someone named “Ousama.” At first, everyone brushes it off as a prank, but Nobuaki knows better. He’s seen this before; it signals that a deadly game is about to begin.
So, just like Btooom, Ousama Game The Animation has this same vibe. People are trapped in a game where the stakes are their lives. Both animes have intense scenes and characters getting bumped off, but Ousama Game is even more in-your-face with the gore compared to Btooom. So if you dig stories where surviving means playing the game, you might like both.
5. Danganronpa: Kibou no Gakuen to Zetsubou no Koukousei The Animation
Imagine a top-notch mystery that’s both tricky and captivating. Welcome to Danganronpa. It’s all about this super fancy school where the principal happens to be a bear. He’s turned the whole place and everyone in it into a giant game.
Here’s the deal: If someone gets killed and someone else is figured out as the killer, that person’s in for serious punishment—no second chances. And the students who survive have to keep playing this deadly game until it’s over if they want to graduate.
What’s cool is that Danganronpa and Btooom share a similar setup. In both, it’s all about killing or being killed. In Danganronpa, the action is in a school, while in Btooom, it’s on a tropical island. So if you’re into intense games of survival, you might enjoy both.
6. Deadman Wonderland
Imagine Ganta Igarashi looking at his device, all excited about the Deadman Wonderland theme park his class is about to visit. But then, while everyone is busy in class, a weird red figure shows up outside the window on the third floor! That’s super odd, right?
Suddenly, everything gets blurry for Ganta. When he comes to, it’s like a nightmare. His classroom is in pieces, his classmates are gone, and that red figure grins. And the weirdest part? Ganta seems to be responsible for all the destruction, even though he doesn’t remember anything.
Next thing he knows, he’s in the hospital, confused as ever. He learns that everyone thinks he did something terrible. But the red figure’s scars on his body are gone!
Ganta starts telling his story to a lawyer named Tamaki. He’s desperate to clear his name. Like Btooom, the anime Deadman Wonderland is about people stuck in a place, forced to fight for their lives. Both Ganta and Ryouta are trying to figure out how to escape this crazy situation.
7. No Game, No Life
Think about the No Game No Life anime, which became popular in 2014. It’s all about Sora and Shiro, siblings and big-time gamers. They’re known for being into games but not really into the outside world.
These two are like online legends, totally unbeatable. They believe that the real world is just a “boring game.”
One day, they get summoned to a different world by a kid named Tet. This new place works differently. Instead of fighting wars, they settle things through games. Tet, the kid who brought them here, made this rule. Even the shape of countries depends on games!
Now, when you look at Btooom and No Game No Life, you see similar things. In both, the main characters are game nerds, super good at what they do, and stuck in a game-like world. But there’s a twist: Btooom is all about surviving to the end, while No Game No Life is a world where everything is a game.
8. Highschool of the Dead

9. Gantz
Let’s talk about Gantz. It’s about a high school student named Kei Kurono, who’s pretty self-centered. One day, he bumps into his childhood friend, and that leads to something unexpected – his death.
But here’s the twist: Kei wakes up in a weird game where he has to prove himself to survive. His life is all about earning points now.
To get those points, he has to fight off different kinds of aliens in this strange black ballroom.
Gantz is a show that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It’s suspenseful and makes you think about how people behave when things get tough.
And you know what’s interesting? Kei in Gantz and Ryouta in Btooom are similar. They’re both good at fighting and can be total badasses.
10. Death Note
Let’s talk about Death Note, a popular mystery anime that people love. It’s got a high rating on MyAnimeList.
The story is about a student named Light Yagami who’s pretty fed up with the world because he thinks a lot of bad stuff is happening. And then there’s this god of death called Ryuk, who’s also pretty bored with his life.
Ryuk has the Death Note and thinks it would be cool to drop it into the human world. The Death Note is a magical book that can kill someone if you write their name.
Even though it presents a very different main storyline from Btooom, the two main characters have similarities in that they are brilliant in their actions and live in solitude. The same studio also produces both anime, so there is no need to doubt graphic quality.
These are 10 anime recommendations that are similar to those of BTOOOM. Which do you think is the most interesting?
