Turns out, we weren’t the only ones surprised by the Avengers: Doomsday cast announcement — one of the stars found out live, right alongside the rest of us.

Big thanks to Collider’s Chris McPherson for bringing this.

During a recent interview on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu opened up about his involvement in the upcoming Marvel epic — and admitted he was just as in the dark as everyone watching the livestream.

“I knew I was going to be in it somehow,” Liu said, “but I had no idea who else was being announced.”

He added with a laugh,

“They don’t tell us anything anymore. Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo kind of ruined it for the rest of us.”

Of course, Liu’s joking reference to Holland and Ruffalo calls back to their history of accidentally dropping spoilers before Marvel movie releases — something the studio has clearly taken steps to prevent going forward.

These days, even the actors are learning casting news in real time.

So who in the star-studded lineup impressed Liu the most?

“When they announced Sir Ian [McKellen] and Sir Patrick [Stewart], I was floored,” he said. “These are two of the greatest actors to ever walk the Earth.”

And with Marvel teasing that more big names are yet to be revealed, Liu probably has a few more jaw-dropping surprises ahead once filming begins.

As for Tom Holland?

Honestly, we wouldn’t be surprised if Marvel hasn’t even told him he’s in it yet — to avoid another classic spoiler moment.
