James Gunn Confirms Another DC Character in Superman

The highly anticipated new Superman movie, directed by James Gunn, is set to hit the big screens on July 11, 2025. The cast for this superhero flick is shaping up nicely, with David Corenswet taking on the iconic role of Superman himself.

In an exciting update, Beck Bennett, known for his hilarious performances on Saturday Night Live, has joined the ensemble. He’ll be portraying Steve Lombard, a colleague of Clark Kent at the Daily Planet newsroom. Gunn himself confirmed the news, welcoming Bennett to the cast of his Superman movie.

For those unfamiliar with the character, Steve Lombard made his first appearance in the comics back in 1973, created by Cary Bates and Curt Swan. He’s a sports reporter and later a presenter for the Daily Planet, the same newspaper where Clark Kent and Lois Lane work.

Lombard is described as a cheeky, funny, and sometimes arrogant character. As a former American football player, he’s known for playing pranks on his coworkers, especially the mild-mannered Clark Kent. Despite his childish antics, he’s a competent journalist who adds a touch of humor to the newsroom.

With just a few secondary characters left to be announced, it seems like the Superman cast is nearly complete. Rumors are swirling that the film might feature a CGI-created villain, but the validity of this speculation is yet to be confirmed. If true, it would require an actor to lend their voice to the malevolent character.

While little is known about the movie’s plot so far, it’s been confirmed that it won’t be an origin story for the character. According to the generic synopsis, this new adaptation “tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He embodies truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Alongside Superman, the movie will feature other powerful characters from the DC Universe, including Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), the Thanagarian warrior Hawkgirl (Isabella Merced), Angela Spica/The Engineer (María Gabriela de Faria), Rex Mason/Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), and Mr. Terrific (Eddie Gathegui).

Directed and written by James Gunn, the cast also includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Neva Howell as Martha Kent, and Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent.
