At the premiere of The Electric State, Joe Russo shared some insight into what fans can expect from Avengers: Doomsday—the highly anticipated return of the Russo brothers to the MCU following Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

The film will also mark the return of Robert Downey Jr., but not as Iron Man—instead, he will reportedly take on the role of Doctor Doom.

A Bold New Direction for the Avengers

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Joe Russo described Avengers: Doomsday as a film that will “challenge audiences”, teasing a storyline unlike anything seen before in the MCU:

“And I think these movies are gonna be a surprise to people. We found a way into the story that’s very exciting to us, but we think very radical. And I think it’s gonna challenge audiences.”

When asked about new characters joining the film, Russo was careful not to reveal too much but hinted that they are “always looking for new faces”, suggesting that fresh additions to the MCU roster could play a big role:

“That would probably be giving too much away, but I think… I think we’re always looking for new faces. Cause there’s always new stories to tell.”

In another interview with Deadline, he further emphasized that any Marvel character could appear:

“Anybody in the Marvel bag could show up in this movie.”

What Can Fans Expect from Avengers: Doomsday?

If the Russo brothers have proven anything, they excel at massive crossover events. Having directed Captain America: Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame, they’ve mastered handling large-scale narratives with dozens of characters and intertwining storylines.

With Avengers: Doomsday promising “new faces,” “new stories,” and an “exciting, radical” approach, the film appears to be another game-changing chapter for the MCU.

While filming is set to begin in the coming weeks, more details—such as potential cast members, set locations, and plot hints—will likely emerge soon. For now, fans can expect plenty of teasers, cryptic responses, and avoided questions, similar to Chris Pratt’s evasive answer when Deadline asked about his possible involvement.

When Does Avengers: Doomsday Release?

Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026.
