Nobuyuki Fukumoto, the creator of the Kaiji manga series, occasionally takes breaks from producing new chapters, and there’s another short break coming up. As revealed in the 45th issue of Kodansha’s Weekly Young Magazine this year, the Kaiji manga will be hiatus until the 49th issue. If everything goes as planned, the case containing the return of Kaiji should be available sometime in November.
The Kaiji manga started in the magazine in 1996 and has been collected into 88 volumes. It has also inspired live-action films in Japan and China, a reality game show, and two seasons of a TV anime.
In English, the manga is published by Denpa, and Manga Planet releases it digitally. Here’s a summary of the story from Denpa:
“Kaiji Itou, a ne’er-do-well, has his aimless life disrupted when the yakuza come knocking. Pressured by debt and anger, Kaiji is forced into high-stakes gambling for his very survival. As the bets get higher and the rules more bizarre, Kaiji must seize control of his own destiny!”
