In a recent interview, AGBO’s chief content officer revealed the title of the upcoming Extraction spin-off series.
The new show is set in the same universe as Netflix’s popular action-thriller films, which star Chris Hemsworth as black ops mercenary Tyler Rake. These films are inspired by the graphic novel Ciudad, created by Ande Parks, Joe Russo, and Anthony Russo.
When Extraction premiered in 2020, it quickly became Netflix’s most-watched original movie, leading to a highly anticipated sequel in 2023. The franchise is produced with the Russo Brothers’ production company, AGBO.
AGBO Executive Confirms Title for ‘Extraction’ Television Spinoff
While fans eagerly await updates on Extraction 3, there’s exciting progress on the franchise’s spin-off series. Earlier this year, Netflix announced a new show starring Omar Sy in the lead role, and now, we finally have its official title—Mercenary.
In an interview with The Direct, AGBO’s Chief Content Officer, Angela Russo-Otstot, confirmed the title while promoting the studio’s latest film, The Electric State:
“We have just announced a green light for a series called Mercenary, which is part of the Extraction universe and starring Omar Sy, and we’re thrilled about that one.”
The name makes perfect sense, as the series will introduce Sy’s character, a new mercenary within the expanding Extraction universe. According to Russo-Otstot, Mercenary will explore similar themes as the films but from multiple perspectives, offering a fresh take on the high-stakes world of elite soldiers:
“It’s an exciting opportunity to pursue a long-form narrative that explores many of the same themes as the first two Extraction movies. The show will follow a single mission but from different viewpoints, showing how various mercenaries have their own allegiances, agendas, and tough decisions to make—some helping, others harming those around them.”
Netflix originally revealed in February that Omar Sy’s character will be a mercenary caught between warring factions and ruthless killers as he embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya. The series will also dive into the emotional struggles of its complex, morally conflicted characters.
Mercenary is set to feature eight episodes, with The Walking Dead’s Glen Mazzara as showrunner and Extraction director Sam Hargrave on board as an executive producer. Russo-Otstot also confirmed that filming will begin in September:
“We’re super excited about this one. Omar [Sy] is at the heart of it, Glen Mazzara is leading the way as showrunner, and we start production in September.”
Netflix has yet to announce a release date, but fans can expect Mercenary to debut on the platform soon.
