Nintendo has officially confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will not support cloud save backups on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. This decision has sparked questions, especially since cloud saving is a standard feature for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.
The company issued this notice on the games’ official pages in both the U.S. and Europe. Curiously, the same warning is missing from the Japanese site and isn’t shown for other upcoming titles like Super Mario Party Jamboree, Metroid Prime 4, or Kirby and the Forgotten Land, all of which are also expected to be available on the new console.
“Please be aware: This software is not supported by the Save Data Cloud backup of the Nintendo Switch subscription online,” says the company on the page of both Zelda Games.
What can or cannot be in Zelda on Switch 2?
Players who already own The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom and upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 will still be able to access their original cloud save data. However, for reasons Nintendo hasn’t explained, saves from the new Switch 2 version of these games won’t be backed up to the cloud.
In other words, you’ll be able to pick up your original adventure on the new console, but any new progress made on the Switch 2 will stay locked to the device itself. The same goes for players who start their journey fresh on the Switch 2 — all their save data will be tied directly to the hardware, without cloud backup support.
Switch 2 Enhancements for Zelda Titles Go Beyond Just Looks
The Switch 2 versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will feature upgraded graphics and noticeably better performance than their original releases.
On top of that, players will get access to a new feature called “Zelda Notes” through the Nintendo Switch App, offering enhanced map and navigation tools via smartphone or tablet for a smoother exploration experience.
