Next month marks 20 years since God of War first launched on March 22, 2005, on the PlayStation 2. With such a major milestone, Sony will likely celebrate meaningfully—and fans speculate that ports or remasters of Kratos’ original adventures may be on the horizon.
Only God of War 3 Remastered is playable on the PS5, while the first two PS2 entries and their PSP counterparts remain locked to their original platforms or PS3 remasters.
According to Giant Bomb journalist Jeff Grubb, who weighed in on the rumors via Bluesky, Sony may have plans to bring back the classic God of War titles closer to the anniversary.
I think that those god of war remaster rumors just jumped the gun a little bit. That stuff will happen closer to this.

How Sony Might Bring Back the Classics
Sony has a few possible approaches:
- PS2 & PSP Emulation – The original God of War games could be added to PS Plus Premium with upscaling and save states.
- A Remastered Collection – A bundle of upgraded versions of the original titles could be released for modern consoles, similar to past PlayStation remasters.
With the recent launch of God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla, which connects Kratos’ Greek and Norse sagas, it makes sense for Sony to bring back the original games—especially with rumors suggesting the next God of War may revisit young Kratos in Greece.
The big question is where God of War: Ascension fits in, as it remains PS3-exclusive, along with its multiplayer mode.
While some elements of the early games have aged, they’re still incredibly fun by today’s standards. If Sony does re-release them, they’d be well worth revisiting—for the right price.
