PS5 Pro Sales Lag Behind PS4 Pro, Likely Due to High Price Tag

Sony’s PS5 Pro got off to a similar start as the PS4 Pro in the United States, but recent data shows it has now started to fall behind.

Circana analyst Mat Piscatella said January 2025’s gaming industry sales saw a 15% year-over-year decline. However, it’s worth noting that this year’s tracking period covered only four weeks, compared to five weeks in 2024, which partially explains the dip.

Regarding the PS5 Pro, Piscatella pointed out that it has fallen behind the PS4 Pro’s launch-aligned sales pace. A major factor is likely the price difference—the PS4 Pro debuted at $399.99, while the PS5 Pro launched at $699.99. Even with inflation, that’s a significant gap that makes the newer console a harder sell.

Sony Prioritizing Profits Over Volume Sales

Despite this, Sony likely anticipated slower sales. The company recently posted a record-breaking quarter, with PS5 shipments surpassing 75 million. Clearly, the focus has shifted towards profit margins over raw unit sales.

While the PS5 Pro may never match its predecessor in total sales, it could see temporary boosts tied to major game releases. Monster Hunter Wilds, launching later this month, could drive demand, and other upcoming blockbusters like Ghost of Yōtei and Grand Theft Auto 6 might also provide sales surges.

Will Sony Drop the Price?

As the generation progresses, many hope Sony will adjust its pricing strategy. A price cut or strategic promotions could make the PS5 Pro more appealing, especially as competition increases.
