By the early 1990s, Oonishi had ascended to key roles, earning recognition as both a key animator and animation director. One of his most notable contributions during this period was as an animation director for the beloved Slam Dunk television series (1993).
In 1996, Oonishi took on his first major role as a character designer for Hell Teacher Nube, directed by Yukio Kaizawa and produced by Toei Animation. This marked the beginning of a celebrated career as a character designer, with Oonishi later lending his creative touch to Kanon (2002), Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo (2006), and numerous other projects. He also served as an animation director on titles such as Doctor Slump (1997).
