During the Geeked Week event, Netflix officially released the trailer for Season 2 of Squid Game (also known as Round 6 in some regions), confirming that the new season will premiere on December 26. The series creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, revealed that Seong Gi-hun, portrayed by Lee Jung-Jae, will return to the deadly competition with a clear motive: revenge. The trailer teases new life-threatening challenges and the ongoing battle between Gi-hun and the mysterious Leader.
Squid Game became a global phenomenon when it debuted in 2021, attracting 142 million households and racking up over 1.65 billion viewing hours. The series also garnered critical acclaim, receiving 14 Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, marking the first time a non-English language show achieved this recognition.
Lee Jung-jae made history as the first Asian actor to win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for a role in another language.
Aside from the series’ success, Squid Game led to various licensed products and even inspired a real-life competition, though the latter did not achieve the same level of popularity.
Season 2 is set to continue where the first season left off, with Gi-hun intent on confronting the Leader and settling unfinished business. Hwang Dong-hyuk has also confirmed that the story will conclude with Season 3, slated for release in 2025, promising a thrilling end to the saga.
Squid Game Season 2 will premiere on Netflix on December 26.
