Following the assassination attempt on Donald Trump last weekend during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where he was shot in the ear, the eighth chapter of the fourth season of The Boys has been renamed simply “Season Four Finale” instead of “Assassination Run.” The series has also released a statement noting that it was filmed last year and that any resemblance to recent events is purely coincidental.
Set to the tune of Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box,” the chapter ends with the arrest of President Robert Singer (Jim Beaver) for the assassination of Vice President Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit), whom Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), out of control with his new powers, brutally split in half.
Senator Calhoun (David Andrews), an ally of Homelander and the newly appointed President of the United States, declares martial law, indicating that the first phase of the coup orchestrated by Sister Sage (Susan Heyward) has been successful. All members of The Boys are arrested, except for Starlight (Erin Moriarty), who manages to escape.
The season closes with Homelander organizing supers at his command (including some young talents from Gen V) to eliminate political enemies of the new order in the United States. Meanwhile, Butcher, consumed by his darkest impulses, seems determined to use and enhance his terrible powers to exterminate all existing and future superheroes.
After the credits, the episode features a revealing post-credits scene where Calhoun leads Homelander, now in a position of greater power, to a chamber. To his amazement, Homelander finds nothing but Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) inside. “It can’t be true… all this time?” he asks, his expression shifting from rage to emotion. Homelander’s biological father has been missing for the entire fourth season.
As fans will remember, at the end of season 3 of The Boys, Soldier Boy was presumed dead in an explosion during his fierce battle with Butcher, Homelander, and Maeve (Dominique McElligott), who absorbed the impact to save her life. Following this incident, the deputy director of the CIA and founder of The Boys, Grace Mallory (Laila Robins), secretly returned Soldier Boy to his cryopreservation chamber and hid the truth from the world. At the beginning of season 4, the official story claimed he had defected to the Russians and was responsible for storming the Vought Tower.
The return of this unhinged, cruel, and twisted version of Marvel’s Captain America in the post-credits scene suggests that Soldier Boy will play a key role in the fifth and final season of Eric Kripke’s series.
