Ubisoft is reportedly working on a new Battle Royale title under the codename “Scout,” aiming to carve out space in a genre currently dominated by games like Fortnite and Apex Legends. According to sources from Insider-Gaming, Ubisoft’s strategy seems to focus especially on attracting players drifting away from Apex Legends.
“The idea is to capitalize on the player base Apex is losing. Ubisoft sees an opportunity for another hero-based Battle Royale to fill that gap,” an anonymous insider shared.
This isn’t Ubisoft’s first attempt at free-to-play multiplayer titles. While the company found long-term success with Brawlhalla, other efforts like Hyper Scape and XDefiant struggled to find their footing. Hyper Scape, another Battle Royale, was discontinued shortly after launch, and XDefiant, intended to compete with Call of Duty and Battlefield, will have its servers shut down in June 2025.
Despite the setbacks, Ubisoft remains a major name in multiplayer shooters, thanks to the enduring popularity of Rainbow Six Siege. The tactical shooter, launched in 2015, continues to thrive, recently announcing the Siege X update with plans to keep the game alive for another decade.
As for “Scout,” the project hasn’t been officially announced, but if Ubisoft hopes to make a splash in the crowded Battle Royale space, it will need to learn from both its past missteps and ongoing successes.
Ubisoft in the Battle Royale territory
Despite Ubisoft’s renewed interest, the Battle Royale craze has cooled off compared to its peak years. The genre, once the hottest trend in gaming, is no longer the center of attention as players gravitate toward more diverse experiences. Ubisoft experienced this firsthand with Hyper Scape, which failed to gain traction and was shut down not long after its release.
It’s clear that Fortnite has evolved far beyond its Battle Royale roots, transforming into an expansive platform that hosts everything from music festivals to LEGO worlds and racing games. Meanwhile, titles like Call of Duty: Warzone, PUBG, and Apex Legends still maintain loyal communities, but they’ve slipped down the ranks in terms of player engagement and overall buzz.
