“The Acolyte,” the latest series in the Star Wars saga, has premiered its first two episodes on Disney+. Created by Leslie Headland, this series is set during the High Republic era, a time period that has yet to be explored in the franchise, which usually expands on well-known timelines.
Following the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga with “Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker,” Lucasfilm has been creating new productions to bring fans back to George Lucas’s expansive universe. While series like “The Mandalorian,” “Andor,” and “Ahsoka” have expanded the narrative within familiar timelines, “The Acolyte” offers a fresh perspective by delving into the final stage of the High Republic, a period of Jedi Order’s greatest splendor.
The High Republic era, spanning from around 500 BBY to 100 BBY, predates iconic characters such as Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Darth Maul. “The Acolyte” is set approximately 132 BBY, making it the earliest point in the Star Wars timeline depicted on screen, about 100 years before the events of “The Phantom Menace.”
During this period, the Jedi Order and the Republic worked closely together to explore the galaxy, particularly the perilous Outer Rim territories. Despite their collaboration, political tensions began to emerge, leading to restrictions on the Jedi.
What Happens During The High Republic?
The era of the High Republic began 500 years before the Skywalker saga. In “Ahsoka,” hints are provided that the Jedi Order underwent significant reforms during this time. Interestingly, the Jedi, who are typically portrayed as detached from everyday politics, were actively involved in the affairs of ordinary citizens.
During this period, the Jedi and the Republic worked together to explore the dangerous territories of the Outer Rim. Their collaboration grew stronger, but political differences and restrictions began to surface, affecting the Jedi’s influence and autonomy.
“The Acolyte” is set at the end of the High Republic, marking the final stages of the Jedi Order’s golden age. Despite their integrity and strict code of conduct, the Jedi were not immune to the allure of power, and there were instances where they might have used their abilities to assert dominance.
Trailers and promotional materials have hinted at a mysterious villain, possibly Darth Plagueis or his master, Darth Tenebrous. It’s conceivable that the Jedi, confident in their superiority, could face a series of murders that shake their faith and contribute to the downfall of the Jedi Order, setting the stage for a new power to rise in the galaxy.
